End

So at the end of 23 Things what have I seen/learned/inwardly digested? While not a digital native, I was familiar with most of the aspects of what we touched on. I'm not living my personal/professional life on the web, in 2.0 or lower, as some are but it was helpful to flit around Rollyo, blogging, etc. Now if I can just get past the next 60 minutes of the 24th thing.....

downloading e-audio

At last the impetus to download a book to my MP3. I have been using it, but listening to radio when I go out walking early in the morning. However, I can't download to my linux computer, so I'll try it at home. The Maryland Overdrive site was visually more appealing, but frustrating because there were so few "copies" of titles available of items in which I was interested. The NetLibrary site did have copies available albeit, many in the public domain.

doing it well or not

In searching out podcasts using Podcast Alley I looked for Episcopal things. I found a podcast for the Church of the Holy Cross in Sullivan's Island, SC. I've attended services there so subscribed in my Google Reader account. However, the most recent sermon posted is for May of 2006. I then saw an entry for Christ Church, Alexandria, but that was for a video which didn't play on my computer. But, aha!, I remember that the Washington National Cathedral already sent me podcasts weekly. There's a very nice introduction of the preacher as well as a brief intro of the Cathedral. Well done!

YouTube and librarians

While the original March of the Librarians was quite good, the sequel, Grand March of the Librarians definitely makes one want to work out and diet!

Guess-the-Google

is a visual version of what our customers come in and ask for. "Well, it's red and the main character really likes cats, but it's not really a mystery...."

http://grant.robinson.name/projects/guess-the-google

The trickiest part was not getting the right answer...

Google Docs (and other web presences)

I have used Google docs in the past with mixed success. I think I'm still a thumb drive kinda person. However I am very excited about our DeskNow application we are using now. Still a neophyte, but it will be great to not be chained to one machine to get to my stuff.

Play in the sand

So while playing in the Maryland sandbox I saw many people posting about favorites. Below is a link to my blog sharing a favorite.

Wiki tiki tavi

The Bull Run wiki isn't an official wiki of that library, but the wiki-er must be an avid avocate for libraries. There's a ton of stuff on there (as well as the MD program!) on Library 2.0. The Princeton PL one is much more interesting with the staff book reviews (although some folks need to spell check, imho.) That looks that a more engaging use of a wiki for everyone.

Come to us

Reading "Away from the 'icebergs'" makes me think of the new MIL and keeping in mind a sense of place. If it's created as a place that all of the community can come to, can't we lure them into returning. A beautiful space, coffee, great displays, continued cooperation with HCPSS. etc. I think this *can* be achieved and that it will be a building the community will be happy to show off and come to. AND isn't it all about relationships? People build those, using many tools, but live and in-person solidifies them.

Reflections #15

So I read To a Temporary Place in Time and the Wikipedia article on Library 2.0.
Commodity/Product/Service/Experience--are we doing all of those things? Some? Have we been doing those things but not calling it that? Maybe/probably/yes

Customer service is seeing our customers and their needs and wants--whether it's guiding a senior citizen to the large print books or working with the 7 year old on Neopets and that child never takes a physical thing from the building. And mostly it's keeping ourselves open to our customer needs and experiences whether or not they never ask for the Hurlburt Mutual Funds newsletter again or not.....

Learning 2.0 in different flavors, colors, sizes. . . .

using Technorati--some text, some photos/videos--you can even be an official fan of a blog! Is he a fan?

aka, Bill Gates has enough $

So Del.icio.us! I talked with Danny about this two years ago. I understand the raison d'etre--where ever you are, there your bookmarks are also. And, your bookmarks are interesting enough to share with others. Well, maybe. It is true that Bill has enough bucks, although he is doing good works with them. Here are a few sites illustrating our computing life here at work. It is true that you can live sans Vista, Office, et al.

Rollyo

http://www.rollyo.com/search.html?q=Try+it+out...&sid=302824&x=11&y=9
Doesn't the rollyo pic look like fruit by the foot?

Well, there it is. I must admit that it was hard to think about a topic, but this is a hobby/vocation (that's a lower case 'v', not VOCATION). If I were some sort of great scholar or student this could work for my favorite sites as I do research. Hmmm, I could even put together sites for public libraries and online bookstores that I use.

LibraryThing

I've cataloged my 5 titles and it has led me to realize that I'd rather talk about them than write about them. http://www.librarything.com/catalog/stonesis Well, not always, but I bet you have other "things" you'd rather do than read about what I've written about. You know who you are...those of us who are waiting for the next quiet, maybe even guilt-free time to go and read whatever is calling from the unread pile...

What the heck?

Ah, the glories of 2.0. I had put in my trading card a few posts ago and a great photo in the post two before this and now I'm not seeing them. (sigh)

Meez-stonesis

So I've always enjoyed the thought of penguins after reading Mr. Popper's Penguins by the Atwaters (there's a great story about how that was published).

RSSSssssssssssssss

Hmm, the next "thing" is asking me to sign up for the Bloglines RSS feed. I've been RSS-ing since last fall when HCL introduced RSS feeds as on option through our catalog. I have 17 feeds on my Google Reader account. Right now they run the gamut of Library Journal, Washington Post, Library of Congress, Newsweek and
this place , too. And the story about that will come another day.....

Sorry, no bubble gum included

Flicker and its utilities strike again.
Well, Nancy Pearl and her doll manufacturers may never come knocking, but it was fun to think about what to put on the card!

Thing 2(thank you Dr. Seuss)

Ahhh, the infamous Power Point. I'm awfully glad that I could read the script on the side and not have to listen to the whole thing. I'm more of a reading/writing preferences person (VARK). While I don't draw beautiful baseball stadia (you know who you are!) during meetings, I usually take copious notes.

You can call it chatter, but.....

It's amazing how much of my job is schmoozing. And it's also some of the most fun since I get to share that I have the best job in the world. Of course the two people in this picture with me know this: Brian Auger, associate director of HCL, and my wonderful husband, John.

The Brave New World

Except that some of it isn't so new. While not an accomplished Facebooker, I still shock teens when I announce that I have my own Facebook or that I have set up a group (Howard County Library--Miller Branch). When my peers ask why, it's simple: I want to know what's out there and it's a great way to see what my kids, their friends, and my younger peers are doing!
